St George Utah: Dr Burdick is there!

It’s good to have choices for placement of adolescents and young adults needing structure to help direct the families down the road of success. And throughout Utah there are many options, and in the end it’s about the consultant’s ability to recognize and know the differences between the programs to help guide the family’s decision. Welcome to St George, home of Red Rock Canyon, Falcon Ridge, and the (soon to be open) Lava Heights. Mariah admissions director provided me with a tour of facilities and meetings with staff to better understand how the PPC (positive peer model) work at all three locations. RRC has a terrific recording studio in providing creative outlet for students, along with art, theatre, sports, and a diverse staff of caring individuals to work with the youth. Falcon Ridge also follows the PPC model, along with an amazing Equine program work that works well with young women to promote their emotional and character development. I assessed the differences in structure and how one site would work better than the other for particular youth. Lava Heights will be perfect for those with more creative aspirations, and need for academic progress. The physical site is under development, and I look forward to visiting the finished product at the open house sometime this spring. More questions? Miami School Connections an International Success

Maybe it was the Miami location of Turnberry Isle, but that alone was not it. The international school partners plus the international agents and consultants in a professional arena put it over the top. The importance of international “thinking” is not be underestimated. In speaking with overseas agents about clients we share, and with whom I had just met in Switzerland and Berlin, the students and families are clearly benefiting. No longer can one simply depend on the US economy to attract students who are of incredible talent and knowledge. By “thinking outside of the box” opportunities begin to emerge such as pursuing an overseas education in film and making your mark before bringing it back to the states. Pursuing a Swiss hospitality & tourism degree, and opening your own B&B back in California or Costa Rica for that matter (both have been done). MBA from China can make you a strong candidate for the “world” economy, not just your own neighborhood. Send me your email with your international success story. Carlbrook Parent weekend

A wide array of behaviorally focused and character building programs exists out there in the therapeutic and quasi-therapeutic school world; some are much better than others, particularly those putting forethought and mechanisms into family participation. Carlbrook is one of the “jewels in the rough” therapeutic secondary schools using good practices of regular family participation.along with strong academic preparation. Academics are always on the forefront for parents sending their youth off to boarding school. Carlbrook handles this argument easily with a list of AP courses, and high college acceptance. However, getting a college degree is not the “end all” for any young adult, as the world is complicated and full of chuckholes to use a term of yore. It’s important to build self esteem, intelligent and careful decision making, positive, healthy peer relations and relationships with authority figures (teachers, staff). Many of those students who attend Carlbrook are over-the-top intellectually, and down-in-the ego and esteem department. In short order, the family unit learns how to provide clear expectations as has done the school staff, and ongoing, healthy change occurs on the part of the student. Their’s is a safe environment where the student learns how to be their true self again.

Few association meetings are as important to licensed educational consultants as the annual NATSAP conference. It allows scholarly individuals and practitioners to confer and learn what works and what doesn’t in the therapeutic settings apart from home environments. The intent is certainly always “when the youth comes home” and the curriculum and philosophy guide the practice. Dr Burdick has found in his work spanning 30 years that one thing is true: When people feel “heard”, it makes a difference, and changes the perception for the individual in need of treatment. That’s true of the IP (identified patient or person) directly participating in a treatment intervention, as well as the other family members indirectly participating in the same. The “art” comes into knowing when timing is right to bring those two parties back in touch in demonstrating the maturity with newly learned communication skills and the strength to make it happen. Dr Burdick has traveled literally millions of miles to find “the right staff” in the “right place” to reach the needs of his individuals in need of treatment. If it’s in their own backyard, then, the plan to work with the individual and the family will will be coordinated and effective. Dr Burdick has recently authored a new test to assist in the determination of necessity of out of home vs. in home treatment. And, at NATSAP he will be sharing that test with others in similar practice.

Berlin International Conference A Success!

In finding the correct school options, the company you keep is most important, and so many great partnerships are created here in Berlin with international as well as domestic schools and programs. Steve Blanchard of Wasatch Academy and Tom Sheppard of Robert Lewis Stevenson and myself had time to spend during this conference to fill me in on the new construction at both of their schools. As a TASIS alumnus, it was great to connect with admissions, Helen Roowalla and learn she is a Banana Slug!

New School Partnerships in the UK & EU

Something to yodel about here in Switzerland with a new partners from our Oct 2011 WEBA event. Beyond the Swiss cow bells and chocolate, one thing is clear: For those who allow themselves to think outside the box, there are international educational opportunities at a reasonable investment with life long payoff. Keep in mind with British and EU programs there is the heavy reliance on “practical” application, i.e., jobs. No matter what higher education promises in the US, ask about the statistics of job placements and how they track that information. It’s not only in the UK or EU. At record pace, the Chinese are designing universities with British and American help, and hiring those graduates. Give us that opportunity to introduce you to some options you might not otherwise have considered. For international business focus, think about learning another language and the cultural and vocational opportunities that can emerge from such a commitment. For example, how about a small group French course in Lausanne in a two or three week course, and putting that on your resume?

If you have the chance to visit the Grand Canyon, do it. The North Rim in October is a perfect time. In visiting with wilderness staff from Wingate the importance of experiencing the expanse of nature for youth is the perfect window of opportunity for treatment. The Grand Canyon is a metaphor for deep the abyss can run between parents and their son or daughter, and wilderness treatment can be an incredibly healing solution. However, let’s be clear: It’s more than the geography, it’s the trained and licensed staff. Dr Burdick only uses wilderness programs that visibly promote their licensure and ongoing training, and Wingate is a partner from that perspective. Their use of Native American culture is fundamental to their mission of rebuilding spirit and meaning for families, as their therapists and field staff support the work of the youth in outdoor setting. It’s Spring in Argentina!

It’s all about perspective, isn’t it. In finding the “best fit” for my clients there is literally nowhere in the world I won’t go to find the best program for an individual, and in this case — Argentina. Why Argentina? Simply, it is more in concert with the european standards that many westerners can appreciate, and at the same time it retains it’s southern hemisphere uniqueness. Young men and women can find exceptional opportunities to strengthen themselves. They can discover a cultural heritage unlike they’ve previously known, and find new opportunity. I am happy to share the world of possibilities that I have discovered with my clients, and the new knowledge and perspective I gained from my colleagues at the 15th World conference in Buenos Aires.

True to my word, I tour the programs where I place my clients and meet with staff to ensure that each and every one of my clients are meeting their education and therapeutic goals. Now, be sure, this is not necessarily the case with other “consultants”. Many have never met their clients, preferring to only meet in the office or over the phone. Many don’t travel due to hassles, exorbitant travel costs, and “tight schedules”. In my mind, the mission is “fit” in programs, and how does one do this from the comfort of one’s office chair? True, airplane seats are not the most comfortable, and the food’s not so good (if at all). Yet, in the end, the “smile” on the face of the client and staff that I traveled 3,000 or 11,000 miles to meet makes it “all worth it” and knowing that they are getting the “best care” possible. Not all consultants aim true in this mission. Now off to tour 7 programs in Washington & Idaho!
